We invite rehabilitation counselors, practitioners, community professionals, educators, students at all levels, and researchers who share these values to join NRCA in shaping change and creating meaningful impact for individuals with disabilities. A Message to the Field of Rehabilitation Counseling
|
Dear Rehabilitation Community,
Since 1958, the National Rehabilitation Counseling Association (NRCA) has stood as the oldest and most respected professional body representing rehabilitation counselors. As highlighted by Kirk & LaForge (1995) and reaffirmed by our current board, NRCA's founding philosophy still holds true: rehabilitation counseling is not just a skill set within general counseling or guidance, but a distinct profession that spans across various employment settings. It’s a profession grounded in core values of diversity, social justice, equity, and inclusion.
What sets NRCA apart is its holistic approach to rehabilitation counseling, which encourages collaboration across different disciplines to create new opportunities for people with disabilities. We focus on research, education, and intervention strategies that empower individuals to fully participate in and contribute to their communities. We aim to raise global awareness of the work we do and work to strengthen networks within the rehabilitation counseling field. Most importantly, we remain committed to the professional growth of those dedicated to helping individuals with disabilities and chronic illness achieve greater independence and self-determination.
NRCA isn’t just another organization; it's the heart of the rehabilitation counseling community. We provide support and leadership for the accreditation of inclusive programs at all academic levels, from undergraduate to doctoral. While academic backgrounds may differ, NRCA’s commitment to empowering individuals with disabilities and maximizing their autonomy remains the same across the board.
We believe rehabilitation counseling is a holistic process. Mental health is undeniably important, but we also recognize the need for a comprehensive approach that addresses physical, intellectual, cognitive, sensory, behavioral, and addiction-related disabilities. Unlike some organizations that narrow their focus, NRCA stays true to its foundational principle of serving individuals with all types of disabilities.
Our commitment to providing rehabilitation education spans all levels—bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral. We’ve been champions for the recognition of undergraduate rehabilitation programs, ensuring they are held to the same professional standards as graduate programs. We also played a key role in the creation of the Committee on Rehabilitation Accreditation (CoRA), which has been instrumental in accrediting undergraduate rehabilitation programs.
NRCA’s commitment to social justice runs deep. We understand the importance of standing as allies and advocates for individuals with disabilities, especially those who face multiple layers of marginalization based on factors like gender, age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status. We believe society thrives when all members are empowered and able to contribute, and we approach each individual’s journey with respect for the complexities of their lived experiences.
Our partnerships are key to advancing the work we do. Through collaborations with organizations like Springer Publishing, the Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling Coalition (VRCC), and the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (CRCC), NRCA ensures that our efforts have a lasting impact. We are proud of our involvement in guiding undergraduate inclusive rehabilitation programs through the Committee on Rehabilitation Accreditation (CoRA) under auspices of CAAHEP. But above all, NRCA remains steadfast in its commitment to advocating for rehabilitation counseling that serves all disabilities.
Continuing education is at the core of what we do. We offer exceptional opportunities for professional development, especially through our conference events, lunch and learn activities, and by working together with other organizations focusing on the various areas related to working with individuals with disabilities.
Much like a lighthouse that guides ships through rough seas, NRCA has remained a steadfast beacon in the world of rehabilitation counseling. Despite the challenges we face, we continue to serve those with disabilities at every level, helping them navigate their journeys toward greater independence and inclusion. Together, we will continue to weather the storm and move forward with purpose and resilience.
We are NRCA—dedicated, enduring, and unwavering.
Sincerely,
Lee Ann Rawlins Williams, Ph.D., CRC, CFLE
President, NRCA
